Geek As Citizen: Introduction

So in the weeks to come I’m going to be exploring a subject near and dear to my heart: what it means to be a geek and a citizen of our communities, nations, and the world.

Yes, that can be a fascinating topic, and of course I’m a compelling author (and handsome, too, just noting). But the question comes up: Why write about Geek Citizenship in the first place, or at least why am I doing it when I could be ranting about the video game industry or interviewing cool people?

As much as I love those things, this is a serious subject.

Twitter Goes Public. Water Is Wet

Linked to the appropriately sarcastic Valleywag.  Twitter is going public, though I have to say I’m not exactly thrilled with some of the players involved.

Still, we knew it would happen eventually, so I guess this is the time.  I actually think they’ll do pretty decently since expectations are different, and they have a lot more love than Facebook.

The Next Potterdammerung: Harry Potter’s World is Back

And apparently J.K. Rowling is writing a script for the film.  It’s going to be based on the textbook “Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them,” which isn’t a half-bad idea, though I do sense a bit of dead-horse kinetic application here.  I also sense that the title is very appealing in the wake of “How To Train Your Dragon.”

So I guess Harry Potter’s world is back . . .

Interesting to see where this goes – because it may also give ideas to other franchises or push them out of the way.
