Fandom: Fail Early and Fail Often

Failure is one of your surest paths to success in your career.

This may sound contradictory as success sounds like the path to success, but the painful if obvious truth is a lot of times we have to fail to get things right. We have to toss the old manuscript and rewrite, we have to learn a business idea is bad the hard we, we have to find out that our art skills aren't quite what we thought. If you want to succeed at your career, often times you have to try things and fail to learn what you're doing wrong (and doing right).

Fandom is an AWESOME place to fail.

Mentor Chains

A great thing about being a fan, a gaming geek, a pro-geek, etc. is that we can find all sorts of role models – from famous programmers to great artists and the like, there are people whom we can model ourselves after and learn from.

Let me make another suggestion for using your friends and fandom to improve: what I call Mentor chains.

Freedom and Passion

You want to live your passion like all of us. You have dreams, you have ideas, you want to bring them out. There's something that burns in your heart to be born. Yet, something constrains you . . .

Or perhaps you don't have that burning. You're passionless. Something was once alive in your mind, inspirations grew and prospered, but it's gone now. Life is dull and drugery. What happened?

In both cases, I'd lay pretty good odds that what you're experiencing is a loss of freedom.
