Grow Up, Don’t Grow Old

I’m a 40-something year old “Professional Geek.”  “Geek 2.0” I call myself, and rather shamelessly at that.  I’m a geek professionally, a geek for money.

I also to not intend to “get old.”  I’d also recommend you, my professional geeks, do not either.

Oh, I intend to mature.  Maturity is how I turned my interests into a career.  Maturity is how I realized this blog is needed.  Maturity is why I value each contributor here.  Maturity is like a good wine or cheese, it’s where things age into a delightful form.

So please, by all means you pro geeks, mature.  Mature and grow.

Just don’t get old.

When you get old you become worn out.  When you get old you become stagnant as opposed to mature.  When you get old you become out of date.  When you get old your age becomes the first and perhaps only thing to matter.

So by all means grow.  Mature.  Grow up.  Just stop before you get old.  Keep enough of the useful enthusiasm that got you here to stay energized.  Keep enough of the energy that drove you so you keep developing, and keep maturing.

As you tell people about your fannish, geeky, and otaku ambitions, they’ll tell you to grow up.  What they really mean is to give up and get old, stagnant, and boring.  What they mean is being like an ideal norm that isn’t normal because it’s all statistical averages and doesn’t exist.  It means pre-aging yourself into ossification.

So don’t grow up and get old.  Mature enough until you’re ideal for what you want, and go on being the person you are, the professional you are.

In fact, shout this to the heavens, because if you’re the best you, the mature you, then you’ll have one hell of a career edge over people who gave up, “grew up,” and grew old no matter what their age.

What Vending Machines Mean For Progeeks And Their Careers

Last week I had my in-depth examination of where I think Coinstar is going, and why they could move into food.  Not a geeky thing on the top, but very pro geek when you look at target audiences and the technology that will be employed.  So, I want to expand on this theory, specifically . . .

If there’s an onslaught of automated vending, what does it mean for we professional geeks?  What does it mean for our careers, beyond, you know, easily accessible coffee.

First, let me explain my pursuit of this in the first place:

  • As noted, I see Coinstar validating vending systems, often unusual ones, with their current plans.
  • There are a lot of vending devices out there.  Be it Shop24, or the bizarre electronic vending machines here in Silicon Valley (really, want to get a DS?  An iPod?), it seems vending machines are slowly becoming more and more common.
  • Vending machines, done right, offer benefits to the consumer: fast, automated service, known stock, constant availability, the potential for useful geographic access, and technical integration.
  • Vending machines, done right, offer benefits to the provider: predictability, 24/7 access, integration with existing technical systems, less human interface.
  • Japan, which is infamous for having vending machines for everything, may show potential for success of increased automation.
  • There is a cultural acceptance of technology that seems to only be increasing.
  • Changes in people’s living due to gas prices, de-suburbanization, etc. could be taken advantage of by companies providing automation.  Or in short, throw the machines where demographics mean you can make money and where you can take advantage of the changes.
  • Machines can be deployed in many ways.  They can be permanent, experimental, even temporary.  They can be mobile – imagine strapping a bunch of vending machines onto a truck and driving that thing around to where it’s needed.
  • Timeshifting.  As sad as it is, some people don’t want to take the time to cook, go to an Apple store, or whatever.  Vending machines provide that.

The Recruiting Nightmare: Sounding the Wake-Up Call

As I’ve been documenting in my repeated rants the last few weeks, recruiting is a nightmare for many reasons, from the craziness of resume spam to the general hate recruiters get.  To be in recruiting these days is to face great challenges and irrational situations that border on the surreal.  To overcome them . . .

Well, I discussed what we can do to ease the problems recruiters face.  I detailed how we can improve our job searching despite the problems.  I speculated on ways we geeks can change recruiting or at least do some things to help.  It’s my hope all this advice pays off for everyone.

Look, the system is terribly broken, it’s not working, and in a few cases it seems to be working backwards.  We’re gonna have to do everything we can to make sure it doesn’t affect us, our friends, and the recruiters we know.  No one is going to save us, so we have to save each other.

It’s just not enough, in the end.

The problem isn’t going away I’m afraid.  We can raise some individual islands of sanity, but the mess of crazy hiring rules and the challenges recruiters face still surrounds us and affects our friends and family and the world.

At some point we’re all going to have to wake up from the nightmare.

How we’re going to do that I don’t know, frankly (though Roddenberry knows I’ll be speculating on it here).  I’m not sure how we’re going to fix a very broken system beyond a few minor starting points.  I am very sure that like any nightmare, you need to wake people up and that’s where we start.

Let people know the system is broken, that recruiting is challenging, that hiring really doesn’t work.  Wake them up to the fact that things really, objectively, are lousy.

Let people know the solutions I’ve shared and that you found, so they hear about ways to fix things, at least in the small.  Wake them up to the fact they can solve at least some things.

Let people know we bloody well we’ve got to fix this.   Wake them up to the fact that they’ve got to wake others up.

It’s a start.  We’ve also got to fix a fractured world economy.  But we might as well do something.

Out of the various people we shake some sense into, people we help, we may find ways to make things better.  We may build alliances.  We may awaken that one person who can get things moving to unriddle the mess of recruiting and hiring these days.

Hell, that one person might be you and you just didn’t realize it yet . . .
