Frustration Friday: Pay Rates, Jealousy, and Hard Truths

Last week I had a nice, relaxing, if organized rant on the economy, the work ethic, and compensation.  I'd like to maintain that moment by looking at something that may be making your Friday a Frustration Friday, but something I've come to accept and understand.

Yes, some people make a lot of money being dishonest jerks and not producing anything.  But many people do get compensated amounts of money others may not like, and at levels that may make others feel that it's unfair.  However, as I've noted, your pay rate isn't always tied to your productivity.

Corrupt money-manipulators and serial liars in business aside, some people are getting paid disproportionate to what they produce, and frankly, there's good reason for this.

Weekly Challenge: Time To Move On

I want you to imagine your ideal job, position, or personal business.  What's it like?  What do you do each day?  Why do you like it?

Now, hold that image in your mind, with as much detail as possible.  Write it down if it helps.

Now, I want you to come up with reasons you'd want to leave that job, position, sell or change the business, or otherwise alter your great, wonderful, perfect situation.  Write down the reasons you'll eventually want something else.

Everything changes, and what we want may not satisfy us as we ourselves change.  So take a moment to ask what will change your mind once you're in an ideal job – that way you can prepare for what's next.

Moving to a Geeky Job: The Business Shift

Related to my previous post on geeky jobs, another issue I encounter with people wanting to use their skills on their jobs is the feeling that what they do know, what they enjoy, just isn't going to have a plance in the areas they want to work.  They're good at something that doesn't seem overly fannish, and they just can't see how it relates to the cool things they want to do or the place they want to work.

I relate of course, as a Project Manager.  I seriously enjoy gant charts, forms, coordinating, and organizing.  I've had moments where I am probably having more fun than anyone else on a project.

Indeed, there were times I wondered where I would go with this, many years ago I began looking at ways to go "the whole fan" and do what I liked where I liked.  I was in IT, which satisfied my geek, but I wanted to do more.
