What have we got today?

Quartz has a look at what’s wrong at Microsoft – and what needs to be done to fix it. Excellent reading. I’m still bullish on Microsoft, but they have some things to fix.

Heroes of Cosplay is having a Kerfluffle that looks to be nasty. It seems NBC and SyFy used photographs without permissions of the photographers. Then they got threatening towards the Cosplayers over who owned what. Yeah, kinda ugly.

George Takei wants action on Russia’s Anti-Gay law. Lending his voice the geek icon is going to be very powerful.

Another day with lots of links . . . think this may be a regular feature!

Technology:

Javascript on hardware? This could leverage all that web skill somewhere else. I’ve seen JavaScript pop up places I haven’t expected.
Cisco lays of 4000 employees. Stock drops. Double ouch. People don’t expect this from Cisco (and job cuts aren’t guaranteed to boost stock prices).
Jailbreaking the internet. The names involved may surprise you.

Someone’s not happy about LinkedIn.

“Strained Pulp” – that arty attempt to be pulp, analyzed. There’s a lot here to analyze about our culture, about retro/referential/remake/genre homages.

Comics:

“Archie” changes plotline due to Russia’s anti-LGBT policies. The Archie line is really shaking it up with real life issues.

Video Games:

Former Steam Bigwig works at Microsoft gaming. I am not surprised. What will happen may be surprising. Also may encourage Steam to up its game.

It’s The Living Room

So as I noted earlier, with the Chromecast and Google’s Hangout box, it’s obvious Google is making a play for the Living Room. This is not surprising, since Microsoft is also making a play for the living room (and the office equivalent) with the XBox One to the point they kinda forgot the whole gaming thing until the criticisms came in.

The living room appears to be the next big device battlefield. Well, the Smart Watch as well, but even after some discussions I’m still not sold it’ll be a battlefield as much as the site of a Pyrrhic non-Victory.

I actually think the living is a valid area for tech companies to target, and wanted to explore that a bit.
