Seventh Sanctum Update 9/21/2013

Here’s a look at the latest site design for the generator page.  A friend gave some brutally honest feedback on how the overuse of the brass bars was, well EYE WATERING and had some contrast issues.  Fortunately it was Bootstrap to the rescue, and I managed to tweak the look in a way that works and seems to be multi-device friendly.

Steve’s Update 9/16/2013

First of all, you can see the latest Seventh Sanctum update here.  The good news is that it’s going to be easier to migrate the generator list pages over, the bad news is I really don’t know the best way to format them.  Suggestions requested.

The migration is going to be easier than I thought in general, but the formatting really keeps challenging me.  I’m trying to find ways to innovate without getting too crazy or disruptive.

The next book (which, yes, will get described in a few months) is almost ready to go to beta readers.  I’ve got to flesh out some resource sections and then I can pass it on.  I also got one of the first introductions written, from a reader of my works, and it actually inspired me even more.  Come to think of it I need to get to the artist . . .

Be sure to check out Muse Hack for my series on Citizen Geekery.  I’ll be jumping into defining geeks this week, along with my usual interviews.  Those as noted are regular things – and I’m enjoying that a lot!

The biggest challenge to time is . . . Saints Row IV.  It’s an interesting experience that I got because I heard it was incredibly fun and funny, and frankly it deserves the praise.  It’s actually reminiscent of Mel Brooks’ humor in many ways, as if Mr. Brooks was incarnated as a younger game designer.  Despite some of the crudity and violence, it has an oddly good natured humor to it, and it spends a lot of time parodying other game tropes and bugs.  I’d like to see this approach used in other games as it shows you can do funny and fun at the same time.

Speaking of time I’m trying a few different time management techniques.  I most post on them in time.  I’m finding that planning on different scales and timeframes is quite important, and it’s making me think about professional management techniques as well.

Speaking of that, expect more posts over time (hopefully).  I want to finally get to some ones on project management and reporting.  I’ve got a whole theory on business reporting that – believe it or not – you’d probably enjoy.

Steve’s Update 9/9/2013

Had a busy weekend – experimenting with building a HTPC.  Pretty educational and fun, and it reminds me of a lot of things I’d forgotten.  I’m still tweaking it, but definitely worth it – and I can see why people would move from cable boxes and consoles.  I’ll probably be writing about that some more.

As you’ve seen I’m trying to do more postings here, to reach out to people, to share things, and just to get ideas out of my head (and perhaps seed future books).  I know the cooking may seem odd, but people ask me advice about that too (in fact, part of “Epic Resume Go” and “Quest For Employment” coming into being was writing down stuff people asked me).

The next book (and yeah, no naming yet) is now in my first round of editing.  However as I want to do it right (and get a few other projects done) it’s probably not going out until January or even February.  I might also do some work later this year or next year on smaller books expanding on other themes.

I’m considering my next big “fan book” and probably need to run a poll.  I’m considering doing something on larger geek social involvement.

With a new design and a cool new logo, the Seventh Sanctum rewrite is now to the coding phase.  It’s going pretty well so far, but I’m coding the generators last because that’s going to be complex, so I can’t predict how tough that’ll be.  The back end code is solid, but we’ve got some formatting changes and those can get time-consuming and surprising – a few pixels here or there, a font size, a background, can all make shocking differences.

Still seeing if we’ll revive the community, there is interest but still figuring the form it’ll take.

I’ll be taking my MuseHack work in a bit of a different direction, looking to focus on culture issues and broaden my interviews.  Stay tuned, I’ll hopefully have some surprises.
